Fremont Mayor Lily Mei Announces
Run for Open District 10 Senate Seat

FREMONT, CA – Mayor Lily Mei formally announced her candidacy for State Senate District 10, an open seat in 2022 today. She is endorsed by Congressmember Ro Khanna, local mayors and leaders throughout the District, which currently spans cities and communities from Castro Valley to Silicon Valley, pending census redistricting efforts occurring this year.

Mayor Mei, a working mom, and former local School Board Trustee, is the first elected woman and Asian American mayor in Fremont’s 65-year history, bringing a unique perspective on the needs of women, children, and families to her leadership role.

“As Senator, I’ll take my bold innovations and proven results in addressing our homeless crisis and creating jobs and affordable housing while maintaining safe and healthy schools to all Californians,”
said Mayor Mei.

“Please join me in voting for Mayor Lily Mei as our next State Senator—she is an exceptional, visionary leader who will take on the State’s toughest issues to protect our most vulnerable Californians,”
– Congressman Ro Khanna.

As Fremont’s Mayor, Mei has led the charge for effective, broad-scale efforts addressing food insecurity, dramatically expanding affordable housing for seniors and working families, and fighting her city’s homeless crisis – including creating a state of the art homeless navigation center with mobile hygiene services, compassionate transitional housing, job placement and mental health services.

“Investing in statewide, year-round fire safety preparedness is another top priority,” said Mei. “At the same time, I’ll be addressing the need for transformative climate change through green initiatives such as emergency solar microgrids.” Under the Mayor’s tenure, Fremont has created the largest number of EV stations of any city in the county.

“Lily is the right woman to represent us in the State Senate during these critical post-COVID times. She’ll provide bold innovation for job creation, climate action, and infrastructure,”
– Union City Mayor Carol Dutra-Vernaci.
